Late Breaking News....Fire Station Fun!

News Channel 9 would like to announce that...... We had so much fun visiting Mr. Chris at Fire Station #8. Mr. Chris discussed fire safety rules and the importance of smoke detectors. He taught us that firemen are our friends and we should never hide from them if our house is on fire. He also taught us what to do if our clothes caught on fire. A special thank you to Michael for demonstrating Stop, Drop, & Roll.

Fireman Mr. Chris

I AM A FIREMAN

I am a fireman, not always dressed in red.

With my fire hat on my head.

I can drive the firetruck, fight fire too,

And help to make things safe for you.

It's Apple Picking Time

We have been studying a unit on apples. Soo… grab a basket and get ready to pick out your favorite apples. I hope none are rotten!
We’ve enjoyed several different types of apple activities. In math, we sorted our apples by color. We had more red apples brought to school, but when we graphed our favorite apple the green apple was our winner. We discovered that apples taste differently especially when there is a gummy worm on your plate. We wrote in our journals about apples. We completed three different apple art activities with the help of Mrs. Beard and Mrs. Lively. We would like to thank you ladies for volunteering in our room. We enjoyed having you and hope that you will come back soon!
On Friday, I showed a video from United Streaming that discussed about how apples grow, are harvested, and made into different things. Last, it talks about how the apples finally make it to us in the store. After watching the video we completed a KWL chart.
Ms. Phyllis visited the store to purchase apple juice and dried apples to make fried apple pies. They were delicious! Our room smelled wonderful!
We would like to say a special thank you to all of the parents that sent in apples to our room! We appreciate all that you do and donate.

Kindergarten Clowns

If I Were A Clown
Author Unknown
If I were a clown
For just one day
I’d make up my face
In the funniest way.

A nose like a hose
Eyebrows of green
And the biggest smile
You’ve ever seen.

Mrs. Haught's Tots Are Juggling Academics and Fun!

The Circus has come to town. It might look like we're clowning around in Kindergarten, but we’ve been very busy juggling patterns, recognizing 2 & 3 D shapes, practicing sight words, position words, rhyming words, and name writing.

Wednesday is Library Day

Library Day

We will visit the library on Wednesday mornings. In the library, Mrs. Cassidy will entertain them with a story. The first few weeks in the library, we focused on book care, listening skills, and how to select a book. This past Wednesday the children had the opportunity to select a book to keep in the classroom. The books will be shared with each other and our reading buddies. Starting this week, the students will be able to check out a book and borrow it for a week. Please don’t forget to return your book before our next scheduled library day.

Early Dismissal Day-September 17, 2008

Early dismissal provides an opportunity for parent conferences and professional learning. September seventeenth will be designated as a professional development day. We will schedule conferences at a later date.
Elementary students will be dismissed at 11:50 a.m. Please make sure to return your child's piece of paper that states how he/she will be getting home from school that day.

Progress Reports

The beginning of the school year is an adjustment period mentally, emotionally, and academically for our younger learners. For this reason, a progress report will not be sent home for the first 4 ½ week grading period. Although some new skills are introduced and other skills refined, this is a time to let the children get accustomed with the routine and their learning environment before any type of formal evaluation of academic mastery occurs.

Who Loves To Read Clifford Stories? Click the arrow and find out.

Wow! What an exciting week this has been. We have started our reading groups and received our first Jack and Jilly Readers. We’ve been practicing our alphabet letters, sounds, and sight words. The children love listening to Clifford stories. We use the stories to discuss, parts of a book, author, illustrator, main character, setting, and making predictions. The students are enjoying guessing what Clifford will do next. We are off to a great start and finally settling into our new schedule. I’m so proud of them!
